Bob Varnberg: A Voice for Greyhounds
It was almost 12 years ago that Bob and I adopted our first greyhound. Never in a million years could we have guessed how that event would change our lives. What an adventure it's been for us......from city dwellers to farmers.....from one dog to fifty......from sports car to transport van. 
This gentle, quiet man became an advocate for greyhounds, constantly looking for ways to make their lives and futures better. He drove pets and race dogs with his friend Don. What an unlikely pair they were...the adoption man and the industry man, but they laughed together and listened to each other's point of view. And I know they really liked each other.
Bob was lucky enough to find a passion and purpose later in life when most people are contemplating retirement and a huge change of pace in their lives. Bob just got busier as each year passed. He was doing something that he believed in and felt he was making a difference of some degree for greyhounds everywhere. To see this big man carry a small, injured pup gently in his arms was a sight to behold. To see his pleasure when a dog went to a wonderful home was a sight I will carry with me forever.
The greyhound community has lost one of it's hardest workers. Many of you have lost a good friend. I have lost the other half of my being. To each of you who has reached out to me personally and to Greyhound Adoptions of Florida in general, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have touched me with your kindness.....and told me that you support his work and want to see it continue for both Bob and for the greyhounds. What a wonderful tribute that is to this most special man.
We miss you Bob......watch over all of us and help us finish what you started.
